19. Moliant i Ddewi

Notes
An important collection of poetry of south-eastern origin. This poem was recorded by Richard Turbeville (fl. 1606) as part of a collection of work by Rhisiart ap Rhys (pp. 154–200), but it does not seem that the poems were written in any discernible order. He also copied the work of Lewys Morgannwg (pp. 111–54), who was Rhisiart ap Rhys’s son, and cywyddau by the poet’s father, Rhys Brydydd, and his uncle, Gwilym Tew (pp. 200–3), possibly all copied from autograph texts. Turbeville added four variant opening couplets beside the first four couplets of the poem (judging from the shade of the ink, he probably
added these lines at a later point). According to this variant version, the first couplet is replaced with another and the
fourth couplet is placed before the third. To the side of the first line in the original text, another later hand wrote these
words: cymer

vchod ‘take the four lines below in place of the four above’ (further, see the textual notes). Turbeville made eight corrections, probably as he was copying the text (see lines 10, 13, 26, 32, 41, 51, 54, 58). Marks that seem similar
to corrections in some lines, such as 10 diled, 13 pulput and 26 wnaeth, are in fact ink blots.
